*EDIT* This piece was used for the official Call of Cthulhu board game, and trading card game. All copyrights belongs to Fantasy Flight Games!

I'd like to dedicate this piece to our recently ended Call of Cthulhu pen & paper roleplaying campaign. We kinda scewed it all up getting all tricked by Nyarlathotep! That bastard old God fooled the party through a portal and they got all thrown back to ancient Egypt, except me who barely manage to jump back out before it closed behind me. Actually the others got off better than me as the world kinda ended shortly after this and I was still stuck in 1929. Oh well, it was fun for as long as it lasted.

This scene is not really from that session at all, but It' inspired by the setting and the monsters you can find in this setting. The dude on the picture is referenced from a photo I shot of a childhood friend of mine. I think he looks cool on the picture, giving it all even though he doesn't really stand a chance against mr. tentacle

Painted during quite a few evenings using Photoshop with a Wacom tablet. Reference used for the character.

Aim for the tentacles around your legs! DX

But seriously, fantastic pose, lighting and choice of colors/shading.

I was gonna say, this HAS to be connected to H.P. Lovecraft in some way. This totally rocks. Thank you very much for sharing it.

I have actually found that d20 Modern works great combined with elements from the d20 version of Call of Cthulhu. The latter doesn't have complete character classes. Interestingly, Sanity is even harsher than in the previous d6 Cthulhu. The only thing that helps is starting out with a really high Wisdom score, but during gameplay otherwise.

I haven't had a whole lot of fun with the boardgame, simply because nobody is interested in playing such a long game session. I played it once but never finished.

I loved playing Call of Cthulhu the roleplaying game, even though it was really hard and we had do to some minor modifications to able to stand a chance, hehe.
Arkham Horror, the board game is a game you need to play with the right kind of people, and when you do, it can be a lot of fun :)

with so much fantastic elements happening around the characters, they are unbelievably calm and docile.
Excellent action elements, way to fill up the frame with so much stuff I had to look thrice.

This image along with "Call of Cthulhu, Arkham horror" are my two of the best illustrations of the existing Myths of C.

"Ia This ya ugleh squid bastard!"

A nice change from the usual Lovecraftian hero, who cowers and dies with soiled underwear.

I love the piece, and the only thing I can nitpick is that reference material for tentacled lovecraftian monsters is difficult to find and thus you go a little 'fuzzy' on 'kriki'... But your fuzzy is worlds ahead of my detailed [link]

Great stuff! Call of C is a great pen and paper RPG, and Cthulioid monsters spice up any RPG without exception. I love the expression on that guy's face: I'm going down, but not before I take some of you with me!
Alice: You've gone quite mangy, cat... but your grin's a comfort.
Cheshire Cat: And you've picked up a bit of an attitude, still curious and willing to learn, I hope.

once again you can clearly see the ludvigsen 'style' in that painting. i like the dynamic setup of action and lighting in that piece. an overall very nice job. :)

Thank you, Chris!
I know I got sloppy in the end, but at least I learned a lot from this piece :-)
Ironshod Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2007
This is a really cool image. I love the sense of action you got. The brown and greens look very moody and little details like the texture on the wall are very nice. Top job :)

Thanks Anne!
I got a bit lazy in the end (hence the crappy looking water-splash  ), but I learned a lot from this piece, which is why I'm painting :-)

I love the gun. What model is it? Colt M1917? ([link])

Thanks! I have no clue about the gun, but according to the reference I was looking at, it looks a lot like your picture, so I guess so :-)

It's always nice to find someone versed in Cthulhu mythos, and even better if is capable of painting them so well! This scene reminds me some Shogoth being that some gentlemen and I found while we were just passing through a small town called Innsmouth, few years ago... I love Call of Cthulhu, and this image takes all the essence of the game!

henning Featured By Owner Mar 3, 2007  Professional Digital Artist
Thanks, I really love the CoC setting, and I got introduced to it painting official CoC stuff for Fantasy Flight Games. Recently we finished a Coc roleplaying campaign, which didn't end very well, lol. That setting is really tough, and they obviously want people to feel hopeless and tiny, which is cool.
P-G-Moran Featured By Owner Mar 3, 2007
Yeah, just like the characters in Lovecraft tales feel: hopeless, tiny and leaved alone in front of pure madness... that's the best of CoC!

I really like your work, congratullations for your sucess working for Fantasy Flight Games!
