:icondonotplz::iconusemyartplz:

This is an illustration for Fantasy Flight Games collectible card game named A Game of Thrones, which is based on the world of best-selling author George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire. This was made for a special plot card.

The characters are Cersei and Jaime.

Illustrations for card games like this always have short deadlines, and are supposed to be viewed on a smaller scale than here.

I like the expressions, like he knows it's naughty to bed his own twin sister, but he does it anyway.

Helt konge.

In my opinion soft brushes makes everything appear too "fake" and unpersonal. With harder brushed you kinda get more of your own identity in each brush stroke, and it makes surfaces a lot more interesting when it's not all super perfect and smooth :-)

Made perfect sense. Though I must say I'm completely surprised that you don't use soft brushes at all. It goes against all my blending "instincts" lol. Maybe that's been my whole problem. Maybe I should go against my instincts ALL the time. :nod:

Hellu :-)
If you would look closely at the high-res version of my paintings, you would notice that it's not as smooth as it might appear on the scaled down versions you see on my gallery here.
What I basically do for blending, is first of all to avoid soft brushes completely. I'm using a normal, round, sharp hard edged brush for all my blending in Photoshop. I use my opacity on 100%, and my flow between 2% and 10%. I have the spacing on the brush pretty tight giving those low percentages enough flow to work with.
I used to have some tutorials where I would explain how to make a brush like this, but I took my old site down. New tutorials (including this tutorial) will be up sometime on the new site in near future :-)

Not sure if this made any sense at all, it's late and my brain is stating to shut down for the day, hehe.

I hope you see this and are able to answer my question:

Blending with Photoshop... how do you get your colors to blend so smoothly? Basically, what settings, brushes and perhaps stroke directions (if they're important) do you use to get it so smooth and perfectly graduated?

If they're a secret, I understand, but I -- for whatever reason -- just simply cannot seem to find the right combination to get the kind of blending power that Painter X has. It's a big pain in the rear to switch to Painter every single time I want to blend something and I know it can be done in Photoshop. Anything you can share would be great. Even if it's just a link to another site that could help. And if you have told it before in a journal or something else that I just missed, I apologize for asking one of the same old questions you always get. But it's driving me crazy.

I've hit one of those plateaus where it seems like nothing you do works. If I could get over this "can't blend with the smudge tool" hump, I'd be back on track, able to move on and continue learning.

Anyway, many thanks in advance :):horns:

Jaime's raised eyebrow says it all. I like the way you didn't show Jaime's right arm, the viewer of this image can wonder if he has still got his hand or not - in any case he uses the left hand to stop Cersei. Beautiful image, and very intriguing.

I've just noticed she's grabbing at his sword. A really nice touch there, works as a metaphor for her jealousy and also as innuendo. Brilliant!
